Art Day Art Day

The Salmon Arts Council hosted an "Art Day" at the Pioneer School on April 7, 2011. Teachers, local artists and the SAC came together in this event toprovide students with an engaging and fun day of creative splendor.

The SAC was able to find and organize several local artists from around the community to provide a day full of creative excitement. The SAC provided funds, materials, and support to our local artists in order to coordinate a day that gives every student the chance to create and be inspired by true professionals. It was a full day of art as grade by grade the students created different projects lead by one of seven local artists who volunteered their time and
talents to the students.

Projects included experimental watercolor, pastels, drawing, wool dying and felting. The SAC hopes to continue to team with the school to provide arts education to our aspiring artists.

Stop by the city center between April 18 and May 20 to view some of the finished projects created that day along with other art work by our community's aspiring young artists.

Participating artists included :
• Rachel Layman (creative watercolor) – AM Kindergarten
• Meri Galvan (pastels – color mixing) – PM Kindergarten
• Jessica McCallum (printmaking) – 1st Grade
• Janet Tomita (Flower wind socks) – 2nd Grade
• Chloe Ross (drawing - parrots) – 3rd Grade
• Ella Duetchman & Kathy Brown (wool dying and felting) – 4th Grade

For more information or to participate in an upcoming Art Day please contact Meri Galvan at 756-2987. All images courtesy of Meri Galvan, www.myshutterlove.com.

Adobe Lightroom Workshop with David Marx

June 10-11, City Center
9am-5pm

On June 11 and 12, David Marx will instruct on how to improve your photography with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Multiple Digital Frames.

Digital capture, and new image processing software programs, have opened up incredible new doors in photography. This short seminar will focus on achieving maximum image quality with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. We will discuss new ways to solve traditional photographic problems in the lassroom and in the field Throughout the weekend, we will use the digital cameras, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.0, and a variety of other specialized image processing software programs to create compelling images. After covering Photoshop Lightroom's impressive image processing capabilities we will explore new techniques to expand dynamic range, extend or limit focus, and to play with the passage of time in a digital photograph. We will work on new ways to remove flaws like the visible noise or grain that the camera creates when using long exposure times. We will explore new technologies to create carefully crafted photographs that are noticeably different from traditional photography.

Throughout the weekend, we will mix engaging lectures and field shoots into each day of the seminar as we move the art of photography up to the next level. You do not have to be a professional photographer, or a Photoshop expert, to enjoy this seminar. You will get more out of this program though if you are comfortable operating a digital SLR camera in manual mode and if you are already familiar with the basics of image management with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. A solid tripod and an intervalometer or cable release are also recommended.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, June 11 & 12, 2011 at the Salmon City Center (and some outdoor shooting) from 9am – 5 pm. Saturday will include some night shooting. For a detailed schedule please contact the Salmon Arts Council office. The cost is $125.00 for SAC members and $150.00 for nonmembers, special rates available for students.

Silk Dyeing Workshop with Deb Gelet
Japanese Hapa-Zome Technique

June 18, 10am - 4pm
Sacajawea Learning Center

With such an incredible turn-out for the last silk dyeing workshop, the Salmon Arts Council's Arts Academy is proud to host another workshop taught by textile artist, Deb Gelet from Ketchum, Idaho. The workshop will take place on Saturday, June 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Sacajawea Learning Center. Participants will dye scarf-sized pieces as before, but with an additional emphasis of using them in our homes as table cloths or wrapped around pillow forms.

Each student should bring a lunch and dress for being outside for about an hour. Students will go on walkabout and gather windfall plant materials (leaves, grasses, twigs, etc.) to use as printing "tools." Participants will also learn about the Japanese method of hapa-zome, basically a way of pounding images and color into the silk. The prints are hauntingly beautiful and redolent of the veins, shapes, and moods of the area in which they are gathered. Please rest assured we'll talk about gathering materials responsibly, too.

"Textiles elicit emotion simply by their tactile nature," said Gelet. "We all carry some sensory memory of the feel of a particular fabric, and my work begins with unfettered (unframed, unmounted) silk to maintain that evocative nature while the silk is in my hands."

The cost of the class is $55 for SAC members and $65 for non-members. It includes all materials needed to make two silk scarves. For more information please contact the Salmon Arts Council office.

Artists Seeking Success

Workshop with Douglas E. Taylor

Friday, September 23
Salmon Valley Center
9:00am to 5:30pm, $25

The Salmon Arts Council in a unique partnership with Salmon Valley Stewardship will be presenting an empowering workshop for artists that want to define their own success, develop a vision and plan of action to be a successful artist.

Douglas E. Taylor, the instructor, has spoken on this important subject, professional art themes, and can share over 30 years of diverse and valuable experience in the art world.

Whether you want to sell your artwork, exhibit in public spaces or institutions, apply for grants, competitions and awards, market through a web site, or learn to be more productive, there are basic professional practices that will distinguish you from the competition.
The participant will learn how to write a mission statement and create an individual plan of action. Each participant will have an opportunity to address specific questions they might have about their pursuit of artistic success.

The workshop creates an opportunity to identify what is really important concerning the exploration of his or her art. Participants will learn: professional practices and understandings that enhance the production and display of their art, as well as how to be a professional and how to deal with and enlist the help of other professionals. Some artists may want to pursue the commercial direction of selling their art through galleries, representatives, or their own studio. Some may desire to produce art that has no commercial value but is intrinsically valuable to society, the world of art, and the nourishment of his or her soul.

Participants are invited to have their own questions answered besides the growing list that follows: How does one approach a gallery or museum? How does one inform them more about being a professional artist? Establishing a value or price for his or her artwork? What is the best way to market a particular artwork? Selling art wholesale or retail? Displaying and being represented in galleries? Art fairs? Selling through representatives? Web sites? Selling originals or reproductions? Reproducing images as gilcle'e or prints? Limited editions? What questions do you have?

Participants are asked to prepare at least three specific questions and include them with your registration. In order to get the most out of this workshop, participants are asked to also do anther homework project before hand.

An affordable investment of only $25 for the all-day workshop, September 23 allows participants to elevate their success and distinguish themselves from their competition. The workshop format provides individual attention, registration is limited. The workshop will be held in Salmon, Idaho at the Salmon City Center from 9:00 – 5:30 on Friday the 23rd of September. For more information or to pre-register please contact the Salmon Arts Council office at 208-756-2987.

Instructor, Douglas E. Taylor has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, studied at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland, and Oregon College of Art in Ashland, Oregon. He taught on the college level from 1982 to 1998, a variety of studio art courses and academic art history courses. He owned and managed a successful art gallery and custom frame shop for over 17 years at Lake Tahoe. Taylor moved to the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana in early 2010 and now manages Art Focus - Fine Arts and Custom Picture Framing in Hamilton, as well as exhibiting his artwork in galleries.
