7:00 pm at the Salmon High School on February 28, 2009
Admission by Donation
The Humanities dance program will showcase “Auschwitz", a thought provoking, raw, organic, and contemporary modern dance piece choreographed by Juleah Davidson. Juleah's inspiration for the piece came from exerts from the book "Man’s Search for Meaning" by Viktor E. Frankel. The dance piece portrays the journey of one man's survival in a concentration camp during World War I. Included with the presentation will be readings from Salmon High School students and musical pieces performed by the Salmon High School band, including the theme song from “Schindler’s List”. Get ready… Portland Taiko is making its way to Salmon, Idaho. The Taiko group will bring an unforgettable performance to our community on Tuesday, March 10th at the Salmon High School Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
An outreach program will be held during the school day for students in the gym. Portland Taiko's assembly programs teach students about the origins of taiko in Japan and the three lessons of taiko thunder (respect, cooperation, perseverance) while weaving humorous storytelling and lively drumming. The age-specific shows engage the audience in an upbeat celebration of Asian-American culture.
Taiko, the Japanese word for drum and the name of the art form, has its roots in ancient Japanese tradition and was used in religious ceremonies, community festivals and theater. The boundaries of villages were defined by the distance from which the community taiko could be heard. American taiko was born in the late 1960s, and it became a powerful symbol of voice during the struggle for redress of the Japanese American internment.
Inspired by the journey to find home, Rhythms of Change: The Way Home weaves spoken word, movement, scenic elements, costumes and lighting with the dynamic rhythms of the big drums to bring to life the search for home and all that comes with it. This theatrical concert evokes the emotions and experiences of those who have persevered to find home.
The only professional taiko company in the Pacific Northwest, Portland Taiko Ensemble was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Composers Forum to represent the state of Oregon in Continental Harmony. This amazing performance is sponsored through the generosity of: Norma Staaf, Bob and Nancy Russell, Connie & Don Bellamy, Munning Physical Therapy, Salmon Therapeutic Massage, Chad & Amy Fealko and Stacy Weems.
Cost is $7.00 members, $10.00 non-members and one child free with each attending adult, students $5.00. For more information please contact the SAC office at 756-2987. Visit www.portlandtaiko.org
